Yesterday we had our routine 20 week visit with our OB/GYN. I went in to the appointment not expecting to hear anything we hadn't already heard before, but I couldn't have been more wrong. I think that so far, this was the most revealing appointment yet.
As I told our ultrasound tech that we had an anatomy scan the week before with the specialist, I noticed she seemed a little confused. She told me that she wondered why I was on her schedule if I had already had the scan done. Since insurance will only pay for one full anatomy scan, she almost didn't do the ultrasound. However, she told me that she would check the report from the specialist to determine if there was something they couldn't see last week. As she read the report, she noted that the specialist couldn't see the baby's profile and the four chambers of the heart. She decided to see if she could get a clear shot, and as it turns out, she certainly was able to do so. Cain's profile looked good as he sucked his thumb oblivious to our analysis of him. Also, she was able to see all four chambers of the heart which brought a huge sigh of relief from me. Until this point, we really haven't been able to see much of the heart because of Cain's stubborn position. Wonder where he gets that from? As she did the scan, the ultrasound tech told me that she remembered me. Although she has been doing ultrasounds for 18 years, their office only implemented nuchal translucency testing in the past 2 years. Within those 2 years, she told me that mine was the highest reading she's ever had. She told me that she kept my paperwork in her desk for several weeks after my appointment, calling the specialist to see if my CVS results were in. She said that she and the doctor felt certain that our result would be Down Syndrome considering the high number of the nuchal fold and the blood work labeling us as 1 in 6 for the same. She said she was shocked to learn the results were normal, and asked if the specialist gave me any reason why that might have happened. She said she had never heard of that in all her years as a tech. I told her that the specialist didn't give me any reason, but I knew that the result was from many answered prayers. I explained that Cain had a lot of people praying for him. "Well, it worked," she said. "Miracles still happen, and your baby is a miracle baby in my book."
And I know she is right. God answered the many prayers that went up for Cain's little life. And I know he will continue to answer many more in the days and weeks to come. What a blessing a simple routine visit turned out to be!
